OPS Infrastructure and Power Supply in the Port of Gijón

EALINGWork Gijonport is a European initiative being developed in the Port of Gijón to promote the electrical connection of vessels while they are berthed and to improve power supply in the port environment. Its purpose is to move towards a more efficient and sustainable port, reducing emissions and fostering port activity that is more respectful of the environment. The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport) programme.

OPS Technology (Cold Ironing) for Vessels

The project implements the Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system for container ships and small- and medium-sized cruise vessels. This technology, also known as Cold Ironing, allows vessels to connect to the onshore electrical grid during their stay in port, making it possible to completely shut down their auxiliary engines.

Environmental Impact: Reduction of Emissions and Noise at Berth This operational change has a direct and measurable impact on the environment:

  • Drastic reduction of atmospheric emissions.
  • Reduction of operational noise while berthed.
  • Overall improvement of environmental performance in the port environment in contact with the city.

EALINGWork Gijonport turns a European policy into real, operational and lasting infrastructure.

European Strategic Node and Energy Transition for the Port of Gijón.

EALINGWork Gijonport represents a structural step in its evolution as a strategic node of the Atlantic Corridor. It makes it possible to anticipate European regulatory requirements (such as the Fit for 55 programme and the European Green Deal), which are already shaping maritime operations within the TEN-T network.

The implementation of OPS strengthens the port’s capacity to maintain its competitiveness, attract new traffic and consolidate a port offering aligned with the electrification and sustainability requirements for core ports.
