Connecting the energy future of the Port of Gijón

EALINGWork Gijonport responds to the European Union’s drive to decarbonize maritime transport, strengthen the TEN-T network and accelerate the deployment of OPS solutions in ports, in line with the European Green Deal, the Fit for 55 package and the EU legislation applicable to the deployment and use of this infrastructure. To this end, the action seeks to improve the port’s environmental performance, strengthen its readiness for target traffic and contribute to a coordinated and interoperable deployment of OPS infrastructure in TEN-T ports.

Key Goals of the EALINGWork Gijonport Project

To materialize this structural change, the project pursues the following measurable objectives

Enable OPS connection

For container ships and small- and medium-sized cruise vessels.

We optimize port operations management through OPS connection.

We will increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact in the port.

Reduce atmospheric emissions

Associated with vessels staying at berth, in line with the Fit for 55 programme.

Use of electricity in port

To promote the use of electrical energy in port in order to minimize the need to keep engines running while vessels are staying at berth. This significantly reduces pollutant gas emissions.

Reduce environmental noise

Technology for a quieter port.

Less noise

We promote solutions that reduce the environmental noise generated by auxiliary engines, improving the well-being and environmental performance of port activity.

Improve the environmental performance of the Port of Gijón

To ensure its compatibility with the nearby urban environment.

Innovative sustainable solutions

We explore how the implementation of green technologies and environmental practices can transform the Port, promoting harmony with the surrounding urban communities.

Strengthen competitiveness

We address the preparedness of the Port of Gijón in the face of the strict evolution of European maritime regulation and the market.

Modernization of infrastructure

To invest in the modernization of port facilities in order to increase operational efficiency and adapt to European standards.

Contribute to a harmonized European approach

For berth electrification at international level.

Promote common technical standards

The adoption of common technical standards across Europe will facilitate interoperability between the different berth electrification systems.
