The OPS system allows vessels to connect to the port’s electrical grid while they are berthed, so that they can switch off the auxiliary engines they normally use during their stay at the quay. This makes it possible to continue meeting their energy needs while reducing emissions and noise.

The reduction occurs because, by connecting to the port’s electrical grid, vessels can stop generating onboard the electricity they need while berthed. In this way, emissions associated with fuel consumption are reduced, as is the noise resulting from the operation of auxiliary engines.

The specific reduction will depend on the number of port calls served, the connection time of the vessels and their technical characteristics. By way of indication, a container ship with a demand of 2 MW and an 8-hour port call could avoid around 11.5 tons of CO2, in addition to reducing the noise associated with the operation of auxiliary engines while it remains berthed.

The infrastructure is planned primarily to serve container traffic operating at La Osa Quay. It may be used by container ships that are technically prepared to connect to the OPS system and are compatible with the planned installation.

No. Its use will depend on vessels being compatible with the installation and having the technical preparation required to connect to the port’s electrical grid. Therefore, its implementation will be progressive and will be linked both to the availability of the infrastructure and to the adaptation of the vessels themselves.

Because it will make it possible to move towards a more modern, efficient and sustainable port, prepared to respond to the new environmental requirements of maritime transport. In addition to contributing to the reduction of emissions and noise, this infrastructure will strengthen the competitiveness of the Port of Gijón and support its adaptation to European legislation promoting the deployment of shore-side electricity supply in ports for certain traffic segments.

This infrastructure is expected to enter into operation from December 2029.

The project is co-funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport) programme, together with the participation of the Port Authority of Gijón.
